Valtrex (valacyclovir) is often recommended for the treatment of shingles and genital herpes. Although this drug helps you control the symptoms, it is not going to cure your herpes. Continue taking Valtrex even if your symptoms disappear – you are supposed to take it for the entire length of period prescribed to make sure you get all the benefits possible. Taking Valtrex is not going to cure your herpes, rather than help you get the symptoms under control. The following medications will need to be reported if you are going to combine them with Valtrex: methotrexate, antiviral medicines, cancer medicines, pain or arthritis medicines, lithium, medicines used to treat ulcerative colitis, drugs used to prevent organ transplant rejection, IV antibiotics, and any other prescription or over-the-counter products you are planning on using. Make sure you tell your health care provider if you develop any serious side effects while using Valtrex, such as blood in the urine, itching, jaundice, fever, confusion, and rash. However, in most cases only a few mild side effects are possible including constipation, upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhea or loose stools.
